Berlin Biennale Curatorial Team

I love that Gabi Ngcobo is curating this year’s Berlin Biennale and this is her curatorial team: Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Yvette Mutumba. The title of this 10th Edition is: “We Don’t Need Another Hero”. It takes place: June 9 to September 9, 2018 I want to see it. All.

Black Romance

I’ve been reading quite a lot of romance of late – especially because many romance novels come free with my reading app. And then it occurred to me, just the other day, that none of the characters in the many romance novels I was reading were black or even people of colour! So I decided to change that by first, researching black romance novels and then downloading some. First disturbing…

Rosemary Karuga

Rosemary Karuga, one of Kenya’s first and most established women artists, makes stunning paper mosaics.  I love them afresh each time.   (image from red hill gallery website)

.Yinka Shonibare + Public Art Fund.

Inspired by: This work just launched in New York last week (Mar 7th) ! If you’re there, go check it out. It’s out on the streets, not hidden behind a gallery wall (= the joy of public art = the work of Public Art Fund whom I love!) So enjoy it because you can and because it’s stunning, as all of Yinka Shonibare’s work is.

.Peter Walala + Growing Art.

Peter Walala, well known Kenyan sculptor, came through to the GoDown Arts Centre to deliver an art piece that he has been growing for 3 years. Like the featured image, by FullGrown.co.uk,  Walala has been shaping and molding the tree into an art piece that is now ready.

.SZA.

Just discovering this artist, SZA, and for today, inspiring. So much I am loving about her and her music. (She was the most nominated woman artist in this year’s Grammy Awards with 5 nominations.)

.The Start & Podcasts.

Yesterday (20.2.18) I came across a coming soon podcast from The Guardian that is described as “A new podcast about artistic beginnings, as told by great artists of our time.” I love podcasts and especially those about artists and I have been planning for way too long to make one. So this is me, taking inspiration from this new podcast and knowing that soon and very soon, I need to…

.Black Panther.

I have so far seen it (Black Panther) twice and gearing up for a third watch! It is great. What’s also great is that Marvel/Disney commissioned a Kenyan photographer, Osborne Macharia “to create an exclusive art piece for the launch of Black Panther for cinemas in London”. This is one of the characters that Osborne created. See more in his Behance space. #Wow! I am completely inspired. p.s: and Osborne…

.Mural Power.

I came across this mural in the Kickstarter campaign by Fearless Collective. I don’t yet know much about this particular campaign (Fearless Public Art Residency: Protest by Creating Beauty) but this mural had me at first scroll! I stopped. Right there. Powerful. This is the power of public art. A good mural is an amazing thing.
